New Music Report: Expert Picks - Week of July 24th

Steve Aoki

There has been a lot of great new music released over the last few weeks. You can find out what was released this weekend in our New Music Report, but take a look at what we've been listening to lately. Our editors Nicole, James, and Isha have shared some of their Expert Picks for the week. Check it out below:

Nicole's Picks

Steve Aoki featuring Bad Royale, Ma$e & Big Gigantic - "$4,000,000"

Steve Aoki has officially released his brand new album Kolony, a much more hip hop influenced set of songs than his Neon Future records he's been releasing. The whole album really shows off his versatility as a producer, especially having released a pop song with Louis Tomlinson not long ago. And while there are a lot of awesome songs to turn up to (cough cough, i'm looking at you "Lit," cough cough), this song -- which also features production from Big Gigantic -- stuck out to me from the second I heard it. First of all, it features Ma$e ... MA$E! But what I love about this song the most is it really separates itself from the others with the production, and especially the horns that are featured on the track -- it's very smooth. Shout out to Steve for this gem. đŸ™đŸŒ

Leland - "Mattress"

If you're a fan of Selena Gomez's new song "Fetish," or Martin Garrix's Troye Sivan collab "There For You," then you're definitely a Leland fan too. The LA-based songwriter has been helping to pen songs for some superstar artists, and now, he's coming at us with his own single called "Mattress" and it. is. EXCELLENT. "Mattress" is an electro pop anthem for anyone stuck in the friend zone. Leland sings, "I hate it when you say I'm such a good friend/And that you call me when you're up," before he jumps into the chorus with, "Why do I always do this to myself/I let you go with someone else/When all I want's my body on your mattress." I'm hopping on the Leland train now, and never getting off.

James' Picks

Lui - "Don't Be Scared"

Alok teams up with Spinnin’ Records for a five-track EP that reps Brazilian Bass highlights. Not only does the DJ appear on cuts like the Bhaskar and Stonefox-assisted “This City” and Sander van Doorn-featured “I House U,” the collection ends with Lui’s “Don’t Be Scared.” It’s a hypnotic four-minute dance number with enough breeze to get you lost on the dancefloor during your next club putting.

Lana Del Rey – "In My Feelings"

I like my Lana Del Rey as cinematic and moody as she comes and Lust for Life cut "In My Feelings" does just the trick. On the four-minute track, LDR sings about being a little too invested in someone. It's a sexy mid-tempo cut that hits all the right notes for any longtime Lana fans. Next single, please!

Meek Mill featuring Rick Ross and Teyana Taylor – "Made It From Nothing"

On Meek Mill’s Wins and Losses track “Made It From Nothing,” the rapper basically runs a victory lap, as he reflects on where he started off in life and where he is now. Meek expresses how much gratitude he feels to finally be able to live a better life after certain hardships that he previously faced. Two artists who are featured on the song are his Maybach Music Group bossman Rick Ross and the forever-talented Teyana Taylor. You can’t help but feel how a sense of relief from Meek and a level of weight off of his shoulders. He can finally breathe now. Shout out to him.

Vic Mensa – "Didn’t I (Say I Didn’t)"

Vic Mensa’s “Didn’t I” is one of those songs that make you respect his hustle just that much more. He’s been on his grind for a minute. Now, it’s Mensa’s time to stunt on the game and prove even further why he’s a force to be reckoned with. The realness that he speaks stops you on your tracks and makes you take his words all in. Let’s also note that this is the very first song on The Autobiography. So, he wants to grab your attention from the jump and does this effortlessly. On the track, Mensa elaborates how he warned the naysayers that he was the man. If they didn’t listen to him before, Mensa is making such that they do now.
