ST5: The Winners Of Country Music’s Big Night & MORE!

It was a close fight, but “The Boss Baby” earned $49 million in its debut weekend, knocking “Beauty and the Beast” down to second with $48 million. But “Ghost in the Shell” was a huge flop, opening in third with $19 million. The movie cost $110 million…Paramount Pictures is hoping the movie does better when it opens in China and Japan next weekend. “Ghost in the Shell” is a remake of a classic 1995 Japanese anime film. Here in the US, there was a lot of controversy here about Hollywood “whitewashing” the movie by casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead instead of a Japanese actress.

Things are going from bad to worse for Stephen Belafonte. Mel B filed for divorce from him last month and it’s not going to be pretty. But TMZ is reporting that police and federal agents were waiting for Stephen when he arrived home at his $9 million mansion in the Hollywood Hills. They patted him down and then they presented him with a search warrant. But I’m guessing Stephen didn’t willingly open the door because they used a battering ram to break in to the house. What were they looking for? Illegal guns. Stephen had been charged with domestic violence back in 2003 and is banned from having any guns in his possession. Police were tipped off that there were guns in the house (I wonder where that tip came from…..) But according to reports, no guns were found and Stephen wasn’t arrested.

American Idol won’t be coming back for the foreseeable future. NBC and FOX both made offers, hoping to get the show back on the air as early as the summer of next year. NBC’s idea was to rotate Idol with America’s Got Talent and The Voice. But the owners of Idol — Fremantle and Core — couldn’t agree on what they should do. Fremantle owns AGT and they were pushing Core hard into taking NBC’s offer, but the big guys at Core felt like this was a conflict of interest for Fremantle. So basically, they couldn’t come up with a counter offer and negotiations are shelved for now.

It wasn’t the most romantic proposal, but it was still very appropriate. In the middle of the wrestling ring, right after he and Nikki Bella won the mixed tag team match at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, John Cena dropped down on one knee and pulled out a ring. She said yes.

Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards last night in Vegas, and OF COURSE they had the Backstreet Boys pop over to perform a couple songs with Florida Georgia Line! That was the highlight for ME, but as far as the awards go…It was a big night for Jason Aldean, who won Entertainer of the Year for the second straight year. Miranda Lambert made history when she won Female Vocalist of the Year for the eighth year in a row, breaking the tie she’d held with Reba McEntire. Miranda also won her fifth ACM Award for Album of the Year with “The Weight of These Wings.” Other big winners last night included Thomas Rhett for Male Vocalist of the Year, Brothers Osbourne for Vocal Group of the Year as well as New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year. And Best New Male and Female Vocalist went to Jon Pardi and Maren Morris. (Yay, Maren!!)
