NBA Team Parts Ways With Top Executive In Surprising Shakeup

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly parting ways with longtime vice chairman and president Masai Ujiri, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday (June 27).

"BREAKING: Masai Ujiri is out as Vice Chairman and President of the Toronto Raptors, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote. "Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and Masai Ujiri have decided to part ways, as Ujiri was entering the final year of his contract, sources tell ESPN."

The Raptors will reportedly conduct a full search for Ujiri as the team's president, the sources confirmed. Ujiri, who was in the final year of his contract, joined the franchise in 2013 and won the NBA Executive of the Year Award during his first season, six years prior to the Raptors' lone NBA championship win in 2019.

Toronto is, however coming off its third consecutive missed postseason, having finished the 2024-25 NBA regular season with a 30-52 overall record. Ujiri played collegiately at Bismarck State College, a JUCO, before transferring to Montana State and had a brief professional playing career in Europe before initially landing a scouting job prior to being hired by the Denver Nuggets as a general manager in 2011.

The Nigerian native's ties to Africa and philanthropic endeavors led to him landing the role of director of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program in 2003, having launched the nonprofit Giants of Africa in his hometown that same year. The organization hosts camps and builds basketball infrastructure as a way to develop the game within the continent, having expanded to more than a dozen countries.
