Hollywood paid tribute to the legendary actors, filmmakers and industry professionals lost over the past year in an heartfelt In Memoriam segment at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 15).

Billy Crystal kicked off the emotional moment by honoring his longtime friend and When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner, who was tragically killed alongside his wife Michele Singer Reiner in December 2025. Recalling how Reiner evolved "from a great comic actor to a master of storytelling," Crystal shared how his "friend Rob's movies will last a lifetime, because they're about what makes us laugh and cry, and what we aspire to be."

Crystal was then joined on stage by many of the actors who starred in the late filmmaker's projects like The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, A Few Good Men and more.

"For us who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, buddy, what fun we had storming the castle," he said.

As the segment moved through beloved actors like Robert Duvall, Val Kilmer and Catherine O'Hara, Rachel McAdams arrived on stage to honor her The Family Stone costar Diane Keaton, "a legend with no end" who passed away in October at 79.

"Believe me when I say there isn't an actress of my generation who was not inspired by and enthralled with her absolute singularity," she said, before reciting a Girl Scout song Keaton would sing on sets. "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That's how long I will be your friend."

Later in the segment, Barbra Streisand spoke about her friend and The Way We Were costar Robert Redford, who died in September at 89, praising his advocacy and remarking on his lasting legacy, like founding the Sundance Institute, which organizes the annual Sundance Film Festival.

"Bob had real backbone on and off the screen. He spoke up to defend freedom of the press, protect the environment and encouraged new voices at his Sundance Institute, some of whom are up for Oscars tonight, which is so great," she said. "He was thoughtful and bold. I called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail, and won d the Academy Award for best director, and I miss him now more than ever, even though he loved to tease me."

Streisand ended the In Memoriam segment by singing a brief snippet of "The Way We Were" with the orchestra.

Days before the show, Oscars host Conan O'Brien hinted to Extra that the segment would be "very powerful," per People. Oscars producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan previously said that the In Memoriam would be longer than those in the past and shared their hopes that "it is a tribute the moves people and feels like it does the incredible people we've lost this last year justice."
